WORD  2018

Picture
The theme is about how Reconciliation is made up of layers. Each layer becomes more opaque than the previous ones.

The second layer is words from a Treaty and shows a river running through the Interlake.

The third layer has four English words: respect, integrity, accountability, empathy and their Ojibway equivalents: Mnaadendimowin, gwekwaadziwin, dbaadendiziwin, zaagidwin.

The final layer shows a student repairing tears in the Treaty. WORD is on the sweater.

Ukrainian Pysanka or Easter Egg.

Picture
Designed by Charlie Johnston

The artists involved in the project are Mentor Charlie Johnston and Mentee Brad Lent. This new mural is part of the Interlake Art Board's Community Spirit mentor program. The program pairs a mentor with an apprentice to expand their skills and knowledge, to build new working relationships, and to create new public artworks. This particular mural will showcase community support for the Ukrainian people in their time of crisis that has affected the entire world. Community Spirit murals honour inclusiveness within Selkirk and nearby areas. By designing public artworks that celebrate diversity, the IAB has seen these murals support and strengthen community. These projects, along with many others, intertwine similarities by developing mutual understanding and tolerance.
