Interlake Art Board Background
In 2013, a group of local artists became concerned that the touring Interlake Juried Art Show needed a working group. In 2014, the group (Joan English, Bev Hart and Ray Anderson) established the Interlake Art Board by cultivating a much-needed working relationship between various art groups. In 2017 Mary Thorne joined the board and Jeannie Red Eagle in 2019 as the board's Mentor/Knowledge Keeper.
Fortunately, the Selkirk Community Art Centre undertook the 2014 Interlake Juried Art Show.
Meanwhile, the IAB gathered exhibition equipment and developed an exhibit manual. They submitted a successful grant application to the Manitoba Community Places fund. This enabled the purchase of 90 Grids, 90 Backdrops, and 6 display stands for the 2015 Interlake Juried Art Show held in Gimli.
The IAB then distributed grids and backdrops to three art groups: Gimli Art Club; Green Acres Art Club in Teulon and the Selkirk Community Art Centre. The display stands went to the the Gimli Art Club. The agreement between these groups is that they may use them in their areas and must also make them available for Interlake Juried Art Shows.
As a result of this rejuvenation, IAB volunteers facilitated the following Interlake Juried Art Shows: Gimli in 2015, Riverton in 2016, Stonewall in 2017, Selkirk in 2018 and in 2022. Pandemic prevented shows in 2020 and 2021. Following the Interlake show, the First Place winners tour as part of the Rural and Northern Juried Shows.
Also in 2017, a grant became available for a mural project. To become eligible for this fund required successful community consultation on incorporation. Since incorporation, the Interlake art Board established the Selkirk Mural and Public Art Project (2018).
Since the beginning, the IAB has:
1. Developed a touring exhibit manual for IJAS hosts
2. Received a grant for grids and display boxes for the IJAS, art groups and artists
3. Built backdrops for the 90 grids
4. Established a Hanging Committee that assists the IJAS at each destination
5. Helped fund and assist youth and adult with classes/ workshops
6. Attended meetings of various art groups to assist and support as needed
7. Funded the art hanging system in the Gaynor Public Library
8. Helped with funding the renovations at the Gwen Fox Gallery gift shop
9. Built and painted ice shacks for Selkirk's annual Holiday Alley
